ATA State and World Top Ten, Explained
What the ATA taekwondo state and world top ten lists are, who can be on them, where they lead, and how team sparring points work in the 2026-27 season.
Someone at a regional says an athlete is "top ten in the state." Everyone nods.
(At least half the people nodding aren't sure what that means.)
Here's the short version. ATA taekwondo keeps a top ten list for each event and division, based on season points. Color belts and black belts in a Leadership or Legacy program can make the State Top Ten, which earns an invitation to the District Championships. The number one spot is State Champion. The World Top Ten is for black belts only and earns an invitation to the Tournament of Champions. Teams have their own top ten that works much the same way.
The top ten is a guest list
Think of each top ten as a guest list for a party at the end of the season. Points put your name on it. The list gets you through the door.
Here's the rule. ATA collects results from every sanctioned tournament, all season. When the season ends, the ten highest point totals in each division make the list.
- One list per event. There are eight: Traditional Forms, Traditional Weapons, Traditional Sparring, Combat Weapons Sparring, Creative Forms, Creative Weapons, Xtreme Forms and Xtreme Weapons. Making the forms list says nothing about the weapons list.
- One list per division. Lists split by age and gender, and black belt lists by rank too.
- Only the best results count. Each event's total comes from a capped number of tournaments, up to 123 points. How ATA tournament points work covers the whole system.
No points, no name on the list. There's no other way on.
The state list is for color belts and black belts
This is the list most families mean when they say "top ten."
- Enrollment comes first. Only athletes registered in an ATA Leadership or Legacy program earn State Top Ten points, counted from the date on the welcome letter from ATA headquarters.
- Color belt lists ignore belt color. Their divisions go by age and gender only, so a yellow belt and a red belt of the same age share a list.
- Points go to the school's state, as of December 31 of the season.
- Only Champion rings count. Recreational and Tiger rings award no points.
The top name on each state list is State Champion for that event and division. There's no final match. The points decide, and a tie means both athletes get the title.
(It's the one guest list where first place is also the prize.)
The world list is for black belts only
The World Top Ten works the same way, with one difference: only black belts who are members in good standing earn World points. Color belts don't have a world list.
Rank changes matter. If a black belt tests into a new division mid-season, later points go to the new division and the old ones stay behind. A black belt who expects to test can enter the higher division early, so the whole season lands in one place.
And one date to circle: a 1st Degree Recommended black belt must have their Decided rank recorded at ATA headquarters by May 15. Otherwise, every State and World top ten point for the season is forfeited.
Each list opens one door
The 2026-27 season ends on April 24, 2027. The post-season events follow in June and July.
- The State Top Ten opens the door to Districts, in that event only. (A forms qualifier can't enter weapons.) The athlete also needs Leadership enrollment, the instructor's permission, a current membership and an online registration. One-step sparring isn't a District event.
- The World Top Ten opens the door to the Tournament of Champions, held at the World Championships, where black belts compete for World Champion.
- A District title opens the same door. A black belt District Champion can compete in that event at the Tournament of Champions, top ten spot or not.
So a Tournament of Champions ring can hold more than ten athletes. The top four in the World standings get the first byes and seeds in sparring, and in forms they perform last. Everyone else is drawn at random. The event awards no points. If someone in the top ten can't make it, the spot stays empty. Number eleven doesn't move up.
(Strict, yes. But at least nobody spends July refreshing the standings and hoping for a cancellation.)
Teams have their own list
Team sparring and team combat sparring keep a separate guest list. Team results don't add to anyone's individual total.
- Three athletes per match. One female and two male competitors, plus up to one alternate of each. A team can use more members over a season, but no more than five at one tournament.
- Black belts from one state. Every member is a 1st Degree Decided black belt or higher (or a Recommended black belt competing in the black belt rings that day), from schools in the same state and district.
- Junior and adult divisions. Juniors: Bantam (8 to 10), Rookies (12 and under), Jr. Varsity (14 and under), Varsity (17 and under). Adults: Elite (18 and up), Premier (30 and up), Legends (40 and up), Executive (50 and up).
- Everyone competes solo, too. Every member, alternates included, must also enter the matching individual sparring or combat event that day.
| Tournament | 1st | 2nd | 3rd |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regional (Class A+, A or B) | 5 | 3 | 1 |
| National (Class AA) | 10 | 8 | 5 |
- Full points, however many teams enter. In-school (Class C) tournaments award no team points.
- The best results count: five regionals and two of the three Nationals.
- No Team ID, no points. The certified coach applies before the season (approval can take 30 days).
- Placing locks you in. An athlete on a team that places 1st, 2nd or 3rd can't join another team that season.
The doors match the individual ones. Most points in the state is State Champion. The state's Team Top Ten opens the door to Districts. The national Team Top Ten, or a District win, opens the door to Worlds and the title of World Champion.
Team sync and team demo have points of their own (10, 8 and 5 at a National; 5, 3 and 1 at a designated regional). That's a story for another day.
Checking the lists is your job
The official lists live in MyATA, behind a login at ATAMartialArts.com. Individual points usually update on Wednesdays and Fridays. Team points post once a month. ATA expects competitors and their instructors to check the standings, and corrections must come in within 30 days of posting. If something looks off, here's how to find and fix missing points.
